GEOGRAPHY
Scotland is very diverse with three distinct regions of the Highlands and Isalnds, Central lowlands and the Southern uplands. Its only land border is with England for 96 km. The Highlands and Isalnds of the NW comprise mainly of ancient rocks which have created mountain massifs such as the Cairngorms and the Skye Cuillins: the highest elevations of the British Isles are found here with Ben Nevis as the tallest peak. Lochs are also a distinctive feature - Loch Ness being the most famous!
PEOPLE AND DIALECTS
Scotland is a land of diverse linguistic and cultural heritage. Today, the main languages spoken are English, Scots and Gaelic. Only 30% of the population are reported to be fluent in Scots and Gaelic is largely confined to the Western Isles.
ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
Scotland has surprisingly interesting flora and fauna, with probably the oldest living this in Europe growing: the Fortingall Yew is 5000 years old. The bryophyte population is of global significance, and Scotland is home to Britain's only endemic bird species, the Scottish Crossbill. Wildcats, Pine Martens and Red Deer among other species can be found, many of which turn white for camouflage in winter months at the onset of snow.
