Hi Matt,

Great to hear that you are keen to get involved in kayaking. As you can see from the blog its a fantastic sport and a great way to get around the coastline or on the rivers.

In terms of getting into the sport the best option is to join a local club. There are many on the west coast and they will have regular trips, equipment hire, coaching and a bunch of people to go kayaking with all for a nominal annual subscription. If you contact Canoe England (www.canoe-england.org.uk) they will be able to put you in touch with a local club.

If not then I would recommend that you hire the equipment and give it a good go before committing to buying a boat as they are quite expensive. When you do I suggest that you begin with a general purpose boat about 2.45 - 2.50m long and start in sheltered bays and beaches.

I hope that this helps,

Good luck and happy paddling!

I am trying to plan a trip down the West coast. I am a novice kayaker but am very experienced in camping and backpacking. I am not sure where to start as far a research and route planning. I have a pretty good handle on the required gear, but not much knowledge in specific brands, prices, ect. Any information that can be offered would be excellent.
