Among the countries of South America, Chile stands out as one of the most notable for a number of different reasons. Perhaps most distinctive is its shape and geography; stretching down along over two thirds of the western side of the continent, its coastlines range from rocky to sandy and seem almost endless. At the southernmost section of the country, on the edge of Patagonia, the land dissolves into long chains of scattered islands, some of which have very special histories. One in particular that almost all of us are familiar with is the infamous Easter Island, a place whose mysteries to this day remain unsolved. Huge statues of human heads called moai dot the volcanic landscape, which are made of single pieces of coral many tons in weight. To this day, scientists and archeologists are unsure how the indigenous people of the island managed to accomplish such a feat without modern technology. A prime spot for ecotourism, the island remains almost completely undisturbed and those on expeditions to the site are encouraged to leave as small a physical footprint as possible to keep it in its original, natural state.
Of course, there are many other islands with much to offer in the way of adventure that are worth exploring on your expedition; for example, the lush, uninhabited, heavily forested hills and valleys of Robinson Crusoe Island are largely untraveled by those on adventure tours. Surrounding the secluded, low traffic island are underwater shipwrecks in stable condition, which are used as otherworldly playgrounds for divers. Chiloe Island on the other hand is home to a significant number of people living rurally with their own unique culture very much worth visiting on an adventure tour. At the southern tip of Patagonia is The largest island, Tierra del Fuego is an excellent fishing spot, with large ferries running to and from major ports on a regular basis. The relative calm of the water between the islands lends itself well to sea kayaking, snorkeling, sailing, skiing, and much more.
The extreme variance in geographical features is perhaps epitomized most clearly by the Andean Mountains, which easily hold their position among the longest continual mountain ranges on the entire planet. This characteristic is made even more impressive when relative width to length is taken into account, as well as the range’s extremely close proximity to the coast. In addition its highest peaks rival those of countries around the globe in stature, with numerous heights exceeding twenty thousand feet; a summit that few dare attempt to conquer. Of course, one needs not scale the highest mountains in the range to enjoy them. Many mountains from end to end and the lakes and rivers of Patagonia are perfect for rock climbing, mountain biking, trekking, horseback riding, or whichever means of travel one might prefer use while taking in the breathtaking views that are presented to those looking for adventure travel.
This is but a small taste of what Chile has to offer those with a taste for outdoor adventure. There is much more to be experienced, and many more places to see on your way. It would be wise in your adventures to absorb the wonderful culture and personalities of the people of Chile as well, and there are no shortage of locations that this can be accomplished. Just look around, and there will be found something for everyone.
