For those who are inclined to outdoor adventure, Borneo represents a rich and diverse sanctuary of life just waiting to be experienced. Known around the world for its vast array of wildlife and unique natural attractions, this third largest island in the world has been travelled for centuries by people looking for an experience like no other. It is home to some of the oldest primary jungle in the world and is famous for its cultural diversity. It is home to many Tribes including the Penan and Kelabit of Sarawak. To clearly illustrate the unequalled biodiversity of the area, consider this: The World Wildlife Fund has documented and reported that over three hundred sixty new species have been found on the island since the year 1996 alone! One quite interesting example of such a life form is known as the Kapuas mud snake, which received its name because it has been said to be found only in the Kapuas River drainage system, an ecosystem unlike any other in the world. The snake is considered to be especially unique in that it is able to change the colour of its skin! Another impressive illustration of the specificity of the country’s environment is that it is the only place that the endangered Bornean Orangutan continues to survive. Those looking for immersion into the realms of untouched nature will be quite at home in the jungles of Borneo, whether their interest is bird watching or botany.
Mountains of varying heights and terrain are found towards the center north of the island, the most notable being Mount Kinabalu, Sabah, whose summit rises 4,000 metres high above the dark and rich rainforests that surround it. It is truly an amazing sight to see the largely unpopulated and barren peak in contrast to the dense flora which wraps its base. For those with a taste for trekking through challenging, adventurous and rocky terrain, there are certainly no shortage of trails to be explored, whether your preference is to traverse them on foot, mule or horseback, or by way of mountain bike. Rock faces which beg to be scaled abound as well, so rock climbers and individuals who prefer rappelling will not be disappointed either. Guided adventure tours are always available for those with the spirit to explore.
Perhaps what is one of the most distinctive natural landmarks in the country is what is known as Gunung Mulu National Park and the Kelabit Highlands, Sarawak, home to some of the most incredibly expansive cave systems in the world, which includes a long underwater river. The largest single cavern in the network of caves is known as the Sarawak chamber. Unbelievably massive, it is the largest such area in the world, with dimensions that exceed 2,300 by 1,300 feet, with a depth of at least 230 feet! This environment has its own unique ecosystem and is home to many species of bats and insects.
Of course, the fact that the country is an island means that sea lovers will find no shortage of activities in the water to participate in, whether their preference be sailing, waterskiing, scuba diving, snorkelling, or parasailing. One can expect to find a great number of delicious seafood markets and restaurants all around the island, most of which are near the country’s many seaports. Whatever your preference, Borneo is sure to fulfil your expectations.
