Of all the many countries in Central America, few can match Belize in terms of uniqueness and complexity of character. Located just below the southernmost tip of Mexico, Belize is a small and sparsely populated country, roughly the size of Massachusetts in the States, or, Wales in the UK. The entire eastern border is met with the Caribbean Sea, and one needs not journey far from the coastline to reach the second largest barrier reef in the world, a veritable dream for snokerlers and scuba divers looking for adventure in beautiful blue waters. In fact, one of the most unique geographical features in the world is found nearby, the massive underwater sinkhole that was once an ancient cave, the “Great Blue Hole.” Those looking to stay dry will find no lack or excitement or intrigue on land, however, as there are numerous Mayan ruins peppering the landscape, waiting to be explored.
Mayans are the indigenous people of Belize, and their ancestors dwell there to this day. The name of the country itself comes from the Mayan word for “muddy river.” There are still Mayan ruins lying undiscovered in the countries stunning interior jungle. An ideal location for some fantastic exploring, trekking and adventure. Though culturally quite diverse, the official language of the country is in fact English, which is spoken fluently by nearly half of the population.
For people who crave adventure or wish to join expeditions in Belize the amount of activities available in such a small country is staggering. You can do adventure tours through the jungle on foot or float down gentle rivers in canoes, rafts or even inflatable tyre inner tubes! What about a full blown expedition to climb Victoria Peak (the highest in Belize) where you have to camp in the jungle amongst the trees and wildlife. Do you prefer adventure on two wheels or four legs? Mountain bikes and horses are used on the tracks around Mountain Pine Ridge.
There are a number of islands in Belize, which are all referred to as Cayes, pronounced “keys.” Among them are Caye Caulker, a small limestone coral island topped with a sand bar, Blackadore Caye, home to a small hotel and private airport, and Ambergris Caye, the largest island of Belize and home to two small airports, among others. Some are reachable only by ferry service, while some others are more accessible. There are different attractions at each island, from diving to cave expeditions; which, if any you visit will be largely dependent upon your interests.
Whether admiring the pyramidal ruins of ancient civilizations, churning waterfalls or anything in between, the path you take on your outdoor adventure will surely be an experience to remember.
