As a fellow Expedition Leader, colleague and friend of Rob Murray John, Bruce Parry is just as comfortable leading an expedition as he is presenting to the camera. Whether his current television work takes him from Mongolia to India, West Papua to Gabon, or Ethiopia to Venezuela, much of Bruce’s early expedition experience prior to Tribe and Amazon was gained when working alongside Rob.
Rob and Bruce spent over two years in SE Asia together working on expeditions and learning the trade. Down the line, Bruce played a key role in a partnership brokered by Rob, with CBBC as the expedition leader for the series Serious Jungle and Desert.
As well as providing leaders for this series, Rob managed the logistical support, safety and back-up system, and in-country expertise. The resulting 6-part documentary won a Royal Television Society award, and riding on the back of this and Bruces' success, the BBC agreed to commission 5 more series. This is an example of how important it is to use an expert company and individuals when filming expeditions overseas and dealing with logistics in remote parts of the world.
By now the concept of Bruce’s series Tribe had been borne. Each episode saw Bruce living alongside local tribal people, in a bid to gain a better understanding of their way of life, an underlying principle in Sky2Sea International’s own operations overseas.
Tribe led onto the most recently acclaimed Amazon series, which Bruce won a BAFTA for in April 2009. Bruce may have now moved on to television stardom, but he still remains an ardent supporter of Expeditions and Rob Murray John. In a note, he has spoken of the ethos from those early days of extreme expeditions:
"So long as the people at the helm remember the ethos of those early days, I will be there at least in spirit until the end. I see the indefatigable Rob Murray John and Ed Swales as exactly those sorts of people."
Just as Bruce was able to combine his interest in television with his passion for expeditions and environmental projects, S2Si follows a similar ethos. As a leading expedition consultancy and expedition provider, S2Si excels at running unique and challenging trips, often into tribal areas, experiencing the real culture. They also excel in enabling television production companies to operate in remote and challenging environments.
S2Si does this by employing some of the most experienced expedition specialists in the business. So if you are keen to work with some of the most professional individuals in the industry, or if you fancy following in the footsteps of Bruce Parry, then why not start where they did? Learn about life on expedition and team up with the experts in remote journeys, Sky2Sea International.
